At Gazi University’s Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, within the “SYNGTOM” research group and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Zeynel Seferoğlu, the doctoral dissertation work conducted by Gökhan Kaplan successfully achieved the synthesis and isolation of the indigo compound on a kilogram scale. The study demonstrated that the indigo dye on waste denim clothing can be reused and converted into valuable chemical inputs, offering a sustainable and innovative alternative for the recovery of textile waste.
This study, authored by Gökhan Kaplan, Prof. Dr. Nurgül Seferoğlu, Prof. Dr. Ertan Şahin and Prof. Dr. Zeynel Seferoğlu, was published in The Journal of Organic Chemistry (Q1), one of the world’s most prestigious organic chemistry journals, and the visual summarizing the study was selected for the cover of Volume 91, Issue 2 of the journal in 2026.
