Within the “SYNGTOM” Research Group of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences at our University, a doctoral dissertation conducted by Gökhan Kaplan under the supervision of Prof. Zeynel Seferoğlu successfully achieved the synthesis and isolation of the indigo compound on a kilogram scale. In addition, the study demonstrated that the indigo dye present on waste denim garments can be recovered and reused to convert it into valuable chemical inputs, offering a sustainable and innovative alternative for the recycling of textile waste.
This study, authored by Gökhan Kaplan, Prof. Nurgül Seferoğlu, Prof. Ertan Şahin, and Prof. Zeynel Seferoğlu, was published in The Journal of Organic Chemistry (Q1), one of the world’s most prestigious journals in the field of organic chemistry. Moreover, the graphical abstract summarizing the study was selected for the cover of Volume 91, Issue 2 (2026) of the journal.
