Atölye 8, an architectural design studio headed by Prof. Dr. Semra Arslan Selçuk, Assoc. Dr. Esra Özkan Yazgan, and Research Assistant Ayşenur Coşkun from the Department of Architecture, has been awarded a prize in the International Union of Architects (UIA) Award for Innovation in Architectural Education. The competition awarded one prize to a participating school/program in each of the five UIA regions, and the Department of Architecture at Gazi University received recognition in the "Region II - Central and Eastern Europe and the Middle East" category.
Atölye 8, the architectural design studio that received the award, aims to contribute to the research policies developed by their university for local, regional, and national development goals. They follow a design education approach that focuses on the changing role of architecture/architect for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To provide solutions to the current issues in Ankara, they signed a three-year collaboration protocol between Gazi University and Ankara Metropolitan Municipality. As part of the Architectural Design course, Atölye 8 continues its work in different areas of the Ulus Historic City Center to address the issues within the region.
The award ceremony organized jointly by the International Union of Architects (UIA), the UIA Commission on Architectural Education and the UIA Commission for Sustainable Development Goals, will be held in Copenhagen on July 3-6, 2023, as part of the The 28th UIA World Congress,
