The event organized by Gazi University Presidency of Department of Health, Culture and Sports on 3rd of December World Disablity Day was held online with the participation of our Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Yıldız event was attended by The Deputy Head of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports Metin Uygur, Director of Cultural Services Emine Sözer, faculty members and students with disabilities who continued their education at our University. At the meeting held online, sign language translation was carried out for our hearing impaired students.
Emine Sözer, Director of Cultural Services, stated that they organized the event to meet with our disabled students to both chat and listen to their problems on 3rd of December international day of persons with disabilities at the request of our Rector Prof. Dr. Yıldız.
Metin Uygur, Deputy Head of the Department of Health, Culture and Sports, expressed their pleasure that our students and rector came together on this special day and he said they will continue to direct and support students to social, cultural and sporting activities.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Yıldız began his remarks by reminding that the 3rd of December international day of persons with disabilities was determined by the United Nations in 1992 to pay attention to the problems of disabled people around the world. Our Rector said that as Gazi University, we made every effort to make the educational life of disabled students easier and implemented the 'Disabled Student Unit' within our University.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Musa Yıldız expressed that, the aim of the unit is to provide the necessary counseling services to students, raising awareness of administrative and academic staff, to make studies in order to meet the needs of students with disabilities; to direct and support themselves to social cultural and sporting activities and to ensure their academic development.
Reminding that 44 disabled students continued their education within our university, Prof. Dr. Musa Yıldız said, "The necessary quotas were loaded from three operators on their phones so that our disabled students would not have problems with the internet during distance education. Reminding that the visually impaired department has been serving within the Gazi University Library since 2007, our Rector said, "This department continues to serve our hearing-impaired students by growing and developing. I find it more accurate for myself to use the expression of those who see with the eyes of the heart instead of the term visually impaired. “On the 3rd of December international day of persons with disabilities , I would like to emphasize that being disabled is not a deficiency but a difference and that we, as Gazi University family, are more beautiful with our differences ”.
After his speech, our Rector Prof. Dr.Yıldız met with our students, who participated in the online event, and listened to their demands and requests one by one. Our students thanked our Rector for the flowers he sent them on the 3rd of December international day of persons with disabilities.
