Prof. Dr. Uğur ÜNAL, born in Ankara on November 27, 1975, graduated from Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education, Department of History Education in 1998. He completed his master’s degree at Gazi University Institute of Social Sciences in 2001 with his thesis titled “Reforms During the Reign of Selim III (The New Order)”. He received his PhD at the same institution in 2006 with his thesis titled “The Ottoman Land Army During the Period of Sultan Abdülaziz (1861–1876).”
He worked as a Research Assistant between 1999 and 2006, as a Lecturer between 2006 and 2009, as an Assistant Professor between 2009 and 2010, and as an Associate Professor between 2010 and 2012 at the Department of History Education at Gazi University, Gazi Faculty of Education. Appointed as a professor in 2017, Prof. Dr. Uğur ÜNAL gave lectures on "History of Turkish Renovation," "Ottoman Paleography," "Ottoman Diplomacy," "History of Turkish Education," and "Foreign Policy of the Ottoman Empire" at the undergraduate and graduate levels at Gazi University. He served as the General Director of the Prime Ministry State Archives between January 5, 2012, and August 7, 2018. He was appointed as the Head of State Archives by Presidential Decree No. 2018/77 dated August 7, 2018. Prof. Dr. Uğur Ünal was appointed as the Rector of Gazi University on August 16, 2024.
Prof. Dr. Uğur ÜNAL, who has studies in the field of Modern Ottoman History, has authored numerous publications on the military system of the Ottoman Empire, educational institutions, and reforms of the modernization period, and he has many articles and presentations in national and international academic journals. Prof. Dr. Uğur ÜNAL, who speaks English, is married and has three children.
