Our university hosted the Special Olympics Regional Games in collaboration with the Turkish Special Sports Educational Association (TÖSSED).
Our Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uslan, who made a speech at the opening ceremony of the games hosted by our university for the first time, emphasized that these games are very important for the special athletes to improve their physical fitness and motor skills and talents, to display their courage and to strengthen their relations with the society. Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uslan said "We are living the happiness of fulfilling our social responsibility as Gazi University by hosting the games organized by TÖSSED that was established in 1982 with the initiative of businessman Sakip Sabanci and Prof. Dr. Hıfzı Özcan".
TÖSSED Chairman Mehmet Civelek thanked Gazi University Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uslan for the support and he conveyed that they were glad that Gazi University hosted the games.
The competitions were done in the branches of athletics, mixed basketball and table tennis in Şehit Muhammed Yalçın Sport Complex and 100 special athletes participated.
At the opening ceremony, which was the stage of the colorful scenes, the students of our university had pleasant time with taekwondo shows and folk dance shows. Volunteers of university students as well as coach academics provided all kinds of support for sportsmen throughout the games.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hacı Ahmet Pekel, the faculty member of Gazi University Faculty of Sports Sciences and Advisor of the Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uslan, made a symbolic competition for a special athlete named Elif who participated in the tournament. Our Rector, who gave the start of the competition, also put on the medal of the special athlete who won the competition.
