"History and Historiography Symposium" held in memory of Halil İnalcık started at our university
The opening ceremony of "International Prof. Dr. Halil İnalcık History and Historiography Symposium" was held at Mimar Kemaleddin Hall in our university, which was organized by Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History, Turkish Historical Society and our university.
The opening speech of the symposium was made by the President of Turkish Historical Society Prof. Dr. Refik Turan. While Prof. Dr. Refik Duran conveyed Halil İnalcık's self-life story to the participants, he emphasized that Professor Halil İnalcık constituted a defense line for the history, which is very important in the life of the states, so as not to be the victim of the ideology and propaganda. He also added that Professor Halil İnalcık is a scientist who needs to be taken as an example for historians and to be investigated in detail. He also referred to Prof. Dr. İlber Ortaylı who says "If Turkish history researchers are looking for an example and a model for themselves, they should examine the life of Halil İnalcık".
The President of Atatürk Supreme Council for Culture, Language and History Prof. Dr. Derya Örs who made a speech at the opening ceremony said that Halil İnalcık is a pioneer in the development of information and document-based history. She also added " Today, the number of archival works of information documents under the hands of our state archives and various institutions in Turkey is increasing day by day". While saying that universities should allocate more resources to human and social sciences, Prof. Dr. Örs emphasized that the support in this area will also contribute to the science of history.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Rector Prof. Dr. İbrahim Uslan said that he is proud to host a symposium organized in memory of Halil İnalcık, who makes innumerable contributions to the world academic literature, and who is called as Şeyh-ûl Müverrihin (The Sheikh of the Historians) and the Leader of the Historians due to his outstanding work in the field of history and the students he has educated. He also added "In addition to the contributions he made to Turkish history, Halil İnalcık is a scientist who deservedly deserves such a symposium to be held in his own name because he is a concrete example of a principled academic attitude". Uslan, who expressed that Gazi University makes a great contribution to the world of Turkish history with the studies since the day it was founded, said "History is consciousness and we act with the understanding that history is a nation."
The opening ceremony of the symposium was attended by a large number of scientists from Turkey and the world, as well as Korean and Pakistani Ambassadors.
